Welfare Transitions and the Health Status: Self-Assessed Health and Depressive Symptoms
Ahn Seo-Yeon

Cho Mi-Ra
Abstract
This paper aims to investigate a causal relationship between welfare transitions and health status, in particular, focusing on the self-assessed health and depressive symptoms, using the Korean Welfare Panel Study (2005-2017). Using a range of panel analysis methods, we show that the results from the previous studies on a causal relationship between welfare dynamics and depressive symptoms might be spurious. Rather, our results show that the entry and exit of welfare are likely to have a less influence on depressive symptoms, supporting the health selection hypothesis. Exit of welfare, on the other hand, indicates a significant improvement on self-assessed health status, thus partially supporting the social causation hypothesis.
